Blackpool Telephone Exchange Automanual Board

REUNION BEEN AND GONE!

Reunion Held 15th November 2007

Imperial Hotel Blackpool

The next one only a few years away .............................

The Blackpool Telephone Exchange Switchboard was located on the 3rd Floor of 7 Edward Street Blackpool and it handled calls to the Operator - Directory Enquiries and 999 Emergency calls. This busy hive of industry was open for business 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. It provided happy employment for hundreds of Telephone Operators (Telephonists) and Supervisors who were split into two distinct camps Day or Night.

In the days before computers Telephone Subscribers details were held on cards - and these had to be updated manually and daily whenever there was any changes.

The Exchange handled calls for Blackpool and the Fylde area from Pilling in the North to Lytham in the South and inland as far as Weeton.

Calls to the Operator (100) Enquiries (191) Directory Enquiries (192) Coinbox Appointments (198) and Emergency Calls (999) were the daily workload. The Day Staff worked from 7.45 AM - 6 pm Monday to Saturday including Bank Holidays. The night staff covered all other times.

The Exchange finally closed in 1992.

A Reunion has been held - and the The Reunion Committee will be posting photos very soon
